About Peoplestown Neighborhood Association

About Peoplestown Neighborhood Association

Peoplestown is a historic neighborhood located just south of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Known for our tight-knit community and rich cultural heritage, Peoplestown boasts a deep connection to the civil rights movement and the city’s broader history. The neighborhood is named after two brothers, William and Robert Peoples, who were early settlers in the area.

Peoplestown is a mix of single-family homes, parks, community spaces and in recent years several new apartment communities. We are adjacent to other vibrant neighborhoods, including Grant Park and Summerhill, and within walking distance of key landmarks like the former Turner Field (now Centre Parc Stadium) and the Atlanta Beltline. The Beltline, a major transit and redevelopment project, is central to efforts to connect Peoplestown more seamlessly to the rest of the city while preserving its unique identity.

The neighborhood has faced challenges, including displacement concerns due to gentrification and development pressures. However, the community has shown resilience and a commitment to maintaining its sense of belonging. Residents of Peoplestown actively engage in advocacy for affordable housing, equitable development, and environmental justice. Notably, community members have fought for solutions to address recurring flooding issues that have impacted the area for years, stemming from outdated infrastructure and urban sprawl.

Peoplestown is also home to several green spaces, such as D.H. Stanton Park, a cornerstone of the neighborhood that offers recreational opportunities and a gathering place. These spaces are critical to fostering the neighborhood’s sense of community and ensuring a high quality of life.

Overall, Peoplestown embodies the spirit of a neighborhood with a proud past and a hopeful future, driven by its passionate residents and their vision for inclusive growth.
